Leisure time during the First Republic from the cultural history point of view

This bachelor´s thesis deals with the issue of leisure time during the first Czechoslovak republic, is in the 1920s and 1930s. It is based on approaches and knowledge of cultural history. In its introductory part, it provides an overview of basic terms, from the concept of leisure time to the concept of cultural history. The main goal of this work is to show and describe given contents of a free time during the first republic, especially related to the stay in nature and care of a human body. The following chapters cover these topics: travelling, tourism, scouting, tramping, summer apartments, spas and sport organizations.
Šumava cabin as a place of memory

The work deals with the tramp locality in Šumava. It is based on available resources and interviews with people knowing the cabin. Describes the stages and history of this place. Captures and characterizes authorities and communities close to the cabin. It places the cabin in their context. It mainly describes the organization of the CHKO Šumava (Protected Landscape Area) and deals extensively with tramping as a phenomenon of spending free time during the cabin's existence. The diploma thesis seeks answers to the questions of who is a tramp, why the cabin is an important place for this community. It searches for common elements between individual narrators and also answers the fundamental question of what defines a real tramp and if the cabin is really a tramp place. Journalist podcast: Tramping

Tramping movement is a unique Czechoslovak phenomenon which accounts for one of the most significant subcultures in history of the country. Its roots date back as far as more than a hundred years and since then the tramping movement has seen a lot of changes in its characteristics as well as in its relationship with the mainstream society. In the means of a journalistic podcast based on interviews with two experts on tramping and two members of the movement, this thesis introduces the tramping movement to a potential wide audience. The theoretical part of this thesis adds scientific information about the topic of the podcast - tramping movement, but also about the genre of podcast itself. It also describes the production process of the podcast and evaluates the results.
The Influence of Single - Sex Tourist Groups on Creating the Identity of Their Members - Case Study

This MA thesis deals with the influence of single-sex tourist groups on creating the identity of their members. The aim is to discover the effect of membership in such a non-coeducational tourist clubs on children, and also how this leisure activity affects children's identity and what impact it has on their development. The theoretical part discusses socializing, social environment, gender, gender socialization and gender stereotypes. Furthermore, it also deals with the influence of peers and peer groups for socialization of children and the issue of the high quality use of leisure time. For the purpose of this thesis, interviews were carried out with all parties involved in the functioning of these clubs, namely leaders, instructors, parents and of course also the current and former members of these clubs. For comparison of some statements, an interview with a leader of a very similar, but non-coeducational club was carried out. The results showed that non-coeducational clubs are beneficial for children because the children have the opportunity to access activities normally carried out by the members of the opposite sex, and to do so without gender-motivated social prejudices. Leisure Culture in the Czech lands in Interwar Czechoslovakia on Example of Summer Apartments

This thesis is devoted to leisure time during interwar time (1918-1938). The main interest concentrates on phenomenon of visiting summer apartments and his character, perception in society and specific relationship to leisure time. Summer apartments were symbol of good status and were very popular among the middle class, but thesis is also dedicated to tramping and beginning of living at the cottage because of specific atmosphere of Czechoslovak republic in 1918-1938. Nature as Myth

What exactly do we mean by "nature"? What do people expect from "nature"? And how has our understanding of it changed? The M.A. thesis "Nature as Myth", using Barthe's two-tiered system of signs and myths as a methodological tool, attempts to answer these questions through an examination of various historical and literary sources. The thesis has a chronological structure, consisting of four parts: 19th century, 1918-1938, 1938-1989, and from 1989 until the present. It focuses on fiction, memoir, and the history of "back to nature" movements. It also deals with environmental and aesthetic issues. The last section touches on the representation of nature in advertisement. How to be a tramp. Mediated debates about the nature of the subculture at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s

This diploma thesis deals with the polemic dispute between the subcultural magazines Tramp and Naše osady regarding the concept of the tramp identity and politicization of the subculture of tramping between the years 1929 to 1931. It examines the so-called red tramping - the inclination of part of the tramps towards communism as well as the related politicization of the subculture and its development, the platform of which is often considered to be the magazine Tramp; as well as criticism of this approach by Naše osady magazine, which advocates non-political tramping. The result of this work is the division of politicization of the subculture in the observed period into three stages: the efforts of MP Jiří Stříbrný and the media in his possession to politicize the subculture towards his politics, politicization and declaratively non-political members the culmination of a moral panic over tramping, and the communist politicization of tramps. The thesis concludes that Tramp magazine was a platform for red tramping, but only in the second half of its existence, not throughout the whole period, and that red tramping can be described as its leftist and later communist orientation, which remains largely ideological than to openly invoke the Communist Party. Origin and initial development of the interwar resort Pikovice

This thesis deals with recreational activities at the end of 19th and beginning of 20th century. Theoretical part focuses on society that is going through significant changes in the process of industrialization. The middle class of society is trying to demonstrate their social status by leisure time activities. Many people are becoming members of sports and touristic clubs. They also take interest in their local environment and cultural events generally. These activities are also frequently followed by raising nationalism. Important chapter is devoted to landscape ecology. At the end of the theoretical part there's also analysis of historical novel mentioning this topic. The empirical research describes origins and development of Pikovice summer resort which served to Prague citizens mainly. First there's a description of environment and geography of the region followed by local history. The key chapter is explaining in detail the development of private recreational houses and then it analyzes social status of their owners and of the construction companies that were involved.
